The three dance crazes of our generation: HARLEM SHAKE

HARLEM SHAKE

The Harlem shake, originally called the albee, is a dance introduced in 1981 by a Harlem resident named "Al B". The dance was initially referred to as "albee" after his name, but later became known as the Harlem shake as its prominence grew beyond the neighborhood. The dance became mainstream in 2001 when G. Dep featured the Harlem shake in his music video "Let's Get It".

Originating in the 1980s in HarlemNew York, the dance is based on an East African dance called Eskista. Since its beginnings it has spread to other urban areas and became popular in music videos. The self-purported inventor of the dance was "Al B", a Harlem resident. Because of its founder, the dance was originally called the "albee" in Rucker and Harlem, but then later became known as the Harlem shake.
Al B is quoted saying that the dance is "a drunken shake anyway, it's an alcoholic shake, but it's fantastic, everybody appreciates it." He said it comes from the ancient Egyptians and describes it as what the mummies used to do. Because they were all wrapped up, they couldn’t really move, all they could do was shake.  Al B states that he has been doing the Harlem shake since 1981. The dance first caught on at the Entertainer's Basketball Classic or EBC and spread from there to other areas.

Though it started in 1981, the Harlem shake became mainstream in 2001 when G. Dep featured the dance in his music video "Let's Get It".
The Harlem shake is commonly associated with a similar dance move called 'The Chicken Noodle Soup'. The "Chicken Noodle Soup" evolved from the Harlem shake and exploded into popularity in the summer of 2006 when DJ Webstarand Young B brought it to the mainstream. The dance is referred to in the CunninLynguists song, "Old School", in Mac Dre's song, "Thizzle Dance," and in Nelly's song, "Dilemma". A band from New York City took the name of the dance and dubbed themselves Harlem Shakes.
In February 2013, a song named "Harlem Shake" (due to a sampled line referring to the Harlem Shake dance) originally uploaded to YouTube on May 10, 2012, went viral and became an Internet meme (see Harlem Shake meme). The dance being done in the Internet meme is not the Harlem shake.

The three dance crazes of our generation: OPPA GANGNAM STYLE

OPPA GANGNAM STYLE

"Gangnam Style" (Korean강남스타일IPA: [kaŋnam sɯtʰail]) is a K-pop single by the South Korean musician PSY. The song was released in July 2012 as the lead single of his sixth studio album PSY 6 (Six Rules), Part 1, and debuted at number one on South Korea's Gaon Chart. On December 21, 2012, "Gangnam Style" became the first YouTube video to reach a billion views. As of March 11, 2013, the music video has been viewed over 1.445 billion times on YouTube, and it is the site's most watched video after surpassing Justin Bieber's single "Baby."
The phrase "Gangnam Style" is a Korean neologism that refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul. The song and its accompanying music video went viral in August 2012 and have influenced popular culture worldwide since then. "Gangnam Style" received mixed to positive reviews, with praise going to its catchy beat and PSY's amusing dance moves (which themselves have become a phenomenon) in the music video and during live performances in various locations around the world. In September 2012, "Gangnam Style" was recognized by Guinness World Records as the most "liked" video on YouTube. It subsequently won Best Video at the MTV Europe Music Awards held later that year. It became a source of parodiesand reaction videos by many different individuals, groups and organizations while also inspiring dance mobs in ParisRome, and Milan, with tens of thousands of participants each. On New Year's Eve 2012, more than one million people witnessed a live "Gangnam Style" performance in Times SquareNew York City, featuring PSY and rapper MC Hammer; as well as in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
By the end of 2012, the song had topped the music charts of more than 30 countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Although its reception in Japan remained lukewarm, "Gangnam Style" topped China's Baidu 500 download list and was labelled by state media as having a "divine melody."
As the song continued to rapidly gain popularity and ubiquity, its signature dance moves were attempted by many notable political leaders such as the British Prime Minister David Cameron, U.S. President Barack Obama, and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, who hailed it as a "force for world peace". Its influence on political activism was exemplified by the short film Gangnam for Freedom, produced by the British sculptor Anish Kapoor to advocate the freedom of expression with the support of various human rights organisations such as Index on Censorship and Amnesty International. According to the United Nations' news division, PSY has become an "international sensation" through his song "Gangnam Style".

The three dance crazes of our generation: TEACH ME HOW TO DOUGIE

Hi readers! This blog post of mine is all about the "Teach me how to Dougie", "Oppa Gangnam Style" , and the "Harlem Shake" also known as the three biggest and the most trending dance actions in our generation today. This will be divided to three blog posts so this first post will feature the first dance craze.

TEACH ME HOW TO DOUGIE

"Teach Me How to Dougie" is a song recorded by American hip hop group Cali Swag District. The track was produced by Runway Star for Cali Swag District's debut studio album, The Kickback (2011). The song was written by Chanti Glee, Charon Childs, and Corey Fowler. The song was released digitally on April 12, 2010 as the first single from the album through Capitol Records. The song refers to the Dougie dance, which originated in Dallas, Texas.
A dance move that refers back to Doug E Fresh, an original rapper from the late 1980s, referenced as early as the mid 90s by the Beastie Boys as "fresh as Dougie." See the Wikipedia page on Doug E Fresh for the proper dance moves.
"Teach Me How to Dougie" was a commercial success, and peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, peaked at number 9 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and peaked at number 6 on the Hot Rap Songs. It was certified platinum in the United States.
The song's accompanying music video was directed by Yolande Geralds. The video shows Cali Swag as well as other people partying, dancing and skateboarding.

Places where I wanna go

These are some of the places or areas which I've been dreaming to go my whole life. These are:

1. PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS (Emeryville, California, USA)

I've always wanted to go here because of my dream of becoming a film director for animated films. And I think that this is the right place to go so that I would be able to see how they create such wonderful characters in animated films that would come to life right in front of our eyes on the big screen in our nearest movie theaters.

2. SAINT PETER'S BASILICA (Vatican City, Rome, Italy)

Saint Peter's Basilica is the place to be if one wants to witness the showing up of a new pope on the balcony, or to just simply see the beauty of how this Holy place reflects the beauty of our religion and our faith in God.

3. DOLBY THEATER/KODAK THEATER (Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California, USA)

To be "Star Strucked" is a feeling that I never felt yet, which is why I wanted to go to the Dolby Theater in Hollywood where actors and actresses often gather up for some hollywood events and awarding ceremonies like the Annual Academy Awards or the Oscars. The remarkable Hollywood Walk of Fame is also located on the streets of this prestigious theater.

4. THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA (Mentougou, Beijing, China)

They say that these place can be seen even on the outer space, well, I don't really care..haha! To go to space and see these historical site is not my thing and very impractical when one can just go to the exact place and enjoy the scenery?!! In my student life, I have realized that I have a little thing for history and stuff, and maybe that the reason why I wanna go here.

5. EIFFEL TOWER (Champ de Mars, Paris, France)

Well I bet that everyone has Eiffel Tower on their dream places wish..I guess? The Eiffel tower is the most visited paid monument in the world. For the record in 2011, a total of 7.1 million people have ascended and visited this place. The tower has become the most prominent symbol of Paris and France, often became one of the sets of movies, and is continuing its role as to amaze people by its beauty.

Fave Childhood Movie

THE LION KING is one of my favorite movies during my childhood years. It is one of the Disney classic films that will never be forgotten or beaten by another film because of its incredible storyline that will touch every person's heart.

The story begins with the majestic sunrise in the Pride Lands of the African Jungle. This day was very special because this day marks the presentation of their newborn prince and the future king of the Pride Lands, Simba.

Meanwhile, baby simba's father, King Mufasa, was angry at his evil Uncle Scar because of his absence during the presentation.

When simba grew a little, his dad told him about his responsibilities as a future king. He should respect every form of life in their kingdom because they were all connected in the great circle of life.

But then Simba wants to explore. He brought his friend, Nala, to a place beyond the borders of their kingdom, and where they are forbidden to go. It is where the elephant graveyard was located, the thing that His Uncle Scar told him.

When they have reached the elephant graveyard, they were in danger because the Hyenas almost killed them. Luckily, the king's assistant, Zazoo and the King saved them. But the King was angry and he scolded Simba.

That incident triggered the Evil Scar to formulate his plan to kill King Mufasa and Simba. He assembled the Hyenas and asked for their aid.

The next day, the plan was in progress. Simba was in danger due to a stampede caused by the Hyenas and Scar.

In the attempt to save Simba, King Mufasa was placed in danger too. Scar pushed King Mufasa away from the cliff and the King of the Pride Lands died.

Simba was in deep sorrow and sadness by the tragedy that caused the death of his father. He was told by Scar to run away and never return.

Simba then ran away far from the Pride Lands. He grew up with his new found friends Timon and Pumba with the motto in life which says "Hakuna Matata" which means NO WORRIES. It caused him to forgot his true identity and responsibility.

Surprisingly, Simba met Nala again. and this time, they were in love with each other. Nala also told Simba how Scar ruined the kingdom and that Simba is the rightful king and not Scar. But simba refused to believe.

This caused Rafiki, the baboon, to intervene and help Simba face his real world by talking once again to his father in a form of a ghost in the heavens.

Because of that, Simba returned to the Pride Lands to take his place as King. But first, he has to kill his evil Uncle Scar, who became a false King of the Pride Lands.

Simba's urge to kill Scar fueled when he saw Scar hurt his mother, Queen Sarabi. Simba fought Scar bravely and killed him.

Now, Simba takes his place in the great circle of life. He takes his first mighty roar as the new King of the Pride Lands.

The kingdom was restored to its original state and the animals were back at the kingdom. Everyone was happy just like before. Simba became King and Nala became Queen. THE END!

FRESHMENatism Part 2

JUNE 13, 2012 - The day that started it all. The day that I was nervous, but excited. The day that I realized that I still can't believe that High School's over and so being immature and childish is not to be shown anymore, the day that started my college life, and most especially, the day that made me become A COLLEGE STUDENT OF SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY, which means, I will already be a part of those STUDENTS WHO GO TO SCHOOL WITHOUT A UNIFORM, JUST CASUAL OUTFITS.

Meeting new people and making new friends in this new environment was not a problem for me, for I was lucky that I was placed in a block section of friendly, nerdish, weird, sexy, and depressed kind of people..hahaha and here they are:

If you would ask me on how would I describe the subjects that I took during this first year, well, here's how i would describe them:

CHEMISTRY: uggghh..my hatest one. Didn't really understand and love this subject. (sorry chem lovers)
BIOLOGY: although it was hard like chem, I still like it. maybe because I love learning about animals and organisms and stuff.
PSYCHOLOGY: MY FAVORITE. everything about psych was interesting , unique, and weird. Even our teacher was weird! .....in a way that her beauty and sexiness was oozing..hahaha!
RELIGION: as usual, THE FEELING MAJOR SINCE HIGH SCHOOL. an easy subject for me but demands a lot of requirements.
MATH: MY HATEST next to chem. I honestly dont want to learn more about numbers and letters. it really freaks the hell out of me and my brain wont work.
POLITICAL SCIENCE: okay so this subject never fails to give me goosebumps. our prof teaches in a way that the conviction and authority and the desire of one to learn is always roaming around the room.
PE/PHYSICAL EDUCATION: a fun and useful subject. Why? because it helps me loose weight and sweat sometimes.
HISTORY: I could honestly say that I love this subject but unfortunately, history does not love me. I always get low scores, thinking that I have studied. weird..
BASIC COMMUNICATION: THE MOST STRESSFUL. easy but requires a lot of paperworks. period.
COMPUTER FUNDAMENTALS: A subject wherein we get to have fun and get crazy at the end of the day. Its because of our teacher actually..haha lol. an easy subject. really easy i tell you..haha

So that's about it! thanks for reading! Wish us luck next year for a new chapter of our college lives.

5 shows of entertainment

hi there!! this blog of mine is all about five of the TV Shows that I am amazed to watch because of their unique mechanics. So, here they are!

1. EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION (Lifestyle Network)

this show is about helping out a family in every episode in changing their lives through the grandest makeover that their house would get. While the re construction of their old house to dream house is going on, the family or the homeowners will be sent to a vacation site for a week like disneyland and other theme parks.

2. MASTERCHEF U.S. (Star World)

MasterChef is a reality cooking competition in which contenders or masterchef aspirants will cook in the strictest way ever. They will be guided and trained by the world renowned chefs like Gordon Ramsay (as seen on the left side of the picture), Joe Bastianich, and chef Graham Elliot.

3. AMERICAN IDOL (Star World, ETC, FOX)

A singing competition wherein contestants undergo nerve wracking eliminations and cuts, and only the best of the best singers are the ones remaining. Those singers who made it to the top ten, or called "IDOL FINALISTS", will then be included in the yearly American Idol Live Tour across america and some selected countries in the world, and will enjoy the opportunity to sing for their votes that will be made by the viewers. The show is hosted by hollywood known host Ryan Seacrest. Its current season has panelists like Randy Jackson, Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey.

4. WHOLE IN THE WALL (Disney Channel)

Hole in the wall is a family oriented show in Disney Channel which I find very exciting and funny. It is a game who makes two opposing family teams of 3. Each team will choose a representative to play by mimicking the shape illustrated on the moving wall. If they successfully go through the wall, 10 points will be awarded. But if not, they'll be thrown to the pool behind them and earn no points.

5. MINUTE TO WIN IT (NBC)

This is an all or nothing game wherein one player plays a 1 minute round and accomplish the task of that certain round. If they did it, they'll proceed to the next round. If not, they'll lose a life and play the round again. There are only three lives in the entire duration of the game.

That's it folks! thanks fo yoh time!

FRESHMENatism Part 1

It was sometime in March 2012 when the issue of "WHAT COURSE TO TAKE" consumed almost all of the regular things in my head, causing it to be the ONLY THING that I was thinking about the entire two final weeks of the month.

I really didn't know what career should i let myself suffer for four nerve-wracking years. well, here's the sitch: My relatives wanted me to go for ENGINEERING, to be specific, the mechanical one. The thing is, engineering is not my thing, specially when MY "MOST FAVORITE SUBJECT", MATHEMATICS, rules in that course. Sorry "bloodline mates", I guess I'm gonna decide on this the JOSHUA WAY.

I remembered that night when I visited the webpage of Silliman University and looked through the list of their course offerings.

As I scrolled and scrolled my mouse down into the bottom of the page, nothing really catched my eyes until I got to the last part of the page. I said to myself, ''WHY NOT MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY OR PHYSICAL THERAPY?" It's not like you have to bring a calculator or any math related gizomos everyday in order to pass your subjects' "obstacle of the day". And besides, the world of Science is quite my thing; I  USUALLY LOVE SCIENCE even if science doesn't love me back (unfortunately).

So I decided to enroll for PT. I have chosen this because 1.) I usually love science (even if science doesn't love me back) 2.) It's something new 3.) I don't want my entire "race" to become a bunch of Nurses. It's like the same thing all over again, and again.

The decision has been made. I will take up the PT Course, one of the HARDEST AND MOST ACADEMICALLY DEMANDING COURSE OUT THERE (as how my insecure neighbors, terrified relatives and unnecessary people threaten me.)

4,792 people gather for Peace

A student organization of Silliman University successfully gathered 4,792 participants early this month in the hopes of breaking the current world record for the largest human peace sign formation.
The Renaissance Youth Leaders Forum (RYLF) wanted a unique twist to the "Light Up for Peace", one of the activities lined up during the University Christian Life Emphasis Week celebration.

“We wanted to do something new, a new and creative way of injecting the idea of peace to the young,” said RYLF's former vice president Patrick Narouzi who served as lead event director.
Thousands of students from the different schools around Dumaguete City, some professionals and 50 youth leaders from Bacolod City participated in the activity at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Coliseum.
The event, which started with a parade around the City, however, needed 1,023 people more to break the current Guinness world record of 5,814.
RYLF was assisted by its partners: the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Oriental Negros Children’s Advocacy Network, Smart Telecommunications and the University Spiritual Life Council.
It can be recalled that in September 2011, a human peace sign formation was also held in front of the Silliman University Church with
